Horatio had known at an early age that he wasn’t like other people. And as he grew older, this sense of being different had continued to grow and he realized that unlike other people, he didn’t crave close human contact. He certainly enjoyed it and even now he took great delight in flirting with a beautiful woman or sharing an intimate moment with someone. But he just didn’t need it like others seemed to need it. He was more than just driven to solve the cases that he worked on. To him those cases meant more than any intimate moment of closeness that he shared with someone. By submerging himself in his work, Horatio was able to feel something more than just a sense of duty. He felt free and at peace when he fulfilled a promise to the victim that he would solve the case. Once a case was over, he would revert back to his lone wolf ways until the next one came along.

She had always done her best to be a dutiful daughter but there were times when her father really tried her patience and made it close to impossible to be the good daughter. She had spent most of her life helping to clean up the messes that her father had made. Her father had turned to alcohol early in his career as a criminal lawyer to deal with the disgust he felt for his job. He hadn’t liked working to get criminals their undeserved freedom but he had needed to support his family. It had been her father that had caused her to go into her current field of work. She had felt a need to attempt to follow her father’s career path in law to a degree. Still sometimes she wished that her father had been anything but a lawyer, especially now when she was forced to watch from the sidelines when a rookie criminalist was working her father’s case.

Pairing: Horatio/Rick interaction
Rating: FR13

Notes: Written for fanfic100 for prompt #3 (ends). Set following “Shattered” (ep410.)
Horatio had always suspected that Rick’s one-sided competition was based in jealousy. He just had never been sure how far the other man had been willing to take that jealousy and competition. And Horatio had been willing to let it go on as long as Rick left his team alone. Even when Rick had chased after Yelina, Horatio had accepted the relationship instead of pushing Rick away because it had made Yelina happy. But now Rick had crossed a line by going after Eric because of a petty drug dealer’s accusation. Horatio now knew that the competition had to end since Rick’s jealousy knew no bounds. Rick would bring down each and every one of Horatio’s team in order to make Horatio pay for what Rick felt was an unfair promotion. The problem was that Horatio didn’t know how to force Rick to end the one-sided competition.
