It was one of the hottest summers on record and wherever Faith went, she felt like she was on fire as if the scorching summer temperatures were boiling her blood. She found herself sluggish, even at night. When she fought a vampire or demon, it took all of her energy to remain focused on the fight. At least, the vampires were having a hard time with the heat as well, which seemed unusual. And although she kept meaning to mention it to Giles when she checked in, it was something that she kept forgetting. Faith kept telling herself that it was just a heat wave, something that was bound to happen in the summer. It was nothing unusual or unnatural about it. That was until she almost died one night in a fight with a vampire. Her senses had told her that it was a newly made vampire. It still had the stench of death and the grave about it and the vampire’s flesh hadn’t paled or hardened. And when Faith looked into the vampire’s eyes, she didn’t see the signs of having lived for a long time, like she did when she looked into Angel’s eyes. Yet the vampire fought harder than Angelus did. What should have been an easy slay for her on a hot summer night ended up leaving Faith near death. She managed to slay the vampire but not before getting knifed in the stomach by an ornate ritual knife. And she knew as she bled that the First was back and more powerful than before.
