When she had been younger, Halloween had been her favourite holiday of the year. It had been the only day in the long year that she had been able to pretend that she was someone else, whom she could escape from all the constraints of her regular life, and in return for this freedom she was given candy for it. Now when she saw the little kids dressed up in their Halloween finery as they strolled the streets of Sunnydale, the one day when they were free, Faith felt sick to her stomach for the choices that she had made.

Faith inhaled the sickly sweet scent of the candy corn that Joyce had just offered her. She didn’t really like the stuff but she still took a handful of the candy and started eating it as she waited for Buffy and her sister to come downstairs. Buffy had promised to take Dawn out trick and treating and since it was a dead night Slayer-wise, Faith had decided to tag online. When they came down, Faith had a taste of what her life might have been like if she had a mother like Joyce. She smiled as she hid her pain.
