Oz had been walking aimlessly around the streets of Sunnydale. Although he didn’t really have a destination, he found himself in front of Willow’s house. Part of him really wanted to forgive the redhead but the memory of her kissing Xander in the factory prevented him from doing so. He had always known that she had had feelings for Xander, but he had believed that her feelings for him had been stronger. He sighed in frustration as he shoved his hands in his pockets and started to walk away.
“Hey Oz, you know it’s not safe at night,” Faith’s voice came from his left.
”So I’ve heard,” Oz wearily responded as he turned to face her.
“Well Fang is worried that Spike or Drusilla might still be in town.”
”I doubt it.”
”How come?”
”Like Spike would sit around and help pick up the pieces.”
”What do you mean?”
”It’s not really important.”
“Oh. Wanna patrol with me?”
”Patrol?”
”Yeah you know, hunt down vamps and stake them after beating them up.”
”I guess.”
”Alright, let’s get going then.”
”Where’s Buffy?” Oz asked as he fell in step with the brunette Slayer.
“With Fang probably sucking face or something like that.”
”Oh.”
“Yeah, apparently they had to discuss whatever it was that Spike told them.”
“Like he had anything useful to say.”
”My thoughts exactly.”
The two fell into a comfortable silence as they walked together towards one of the several cemeteries in Sunnydale. They worked well together as they encountered a few vampires. When they had finished patrolling the cemetery, the sky was tinged with a pink light, signaling that dawn wasn’t that far off. Faith ended up walking him home, despite his protests.
“So wanna help me patrol tomorrow night?”
”I don’t know.”
”What you’d rather brood in front of her house?”
”It’s not like that.”
”Really then why have I seen you there the last couple of nights.”
”Faith…” Oz started.
”Look, I like you. You’re a pretty cool guy and unlike the others, you don’t constantly annoy me. All I’m asking is for you to patrol with me. Nothing more, so what do you say?”
”Sure, I guess.”
”Good. How about I meet you here?”
”Okay.”
Faith smiled at him before she turned and left. He didn’t know what to make of her. She was different from Willow in every way possible. Faith was brash and crude, whereas Willow was sweet and innocent. But he had enjoyed her company and for the first time since he had witnessed his girlfriend passionately kissing her best friend, he had felt something rather than anger and sadness. The more he thought about it, the more he could see himself kissing Faith if the situation had been different. It wasn’t as if he was going to use her to make Willow jealous or anything, or even kiss the brunette. Instead, he just wonder what would have happened if she had arrived in Sunnydale a year earlier. He felt closer to her in a way that he didn’t have with Willow. Not that he would act on it, he couldn’t see Faith putting up with that.
