This week's challenge was "watching." Here's five responses from me.

He watches her from the shadows because that’s the only place he can do so. He watches as she kisses her boyfriend and he thinks of how he’d love nothing more than to rip the wolf to pieces. Neither of them are to blame for the intensity of his feelings. But he blames Giles for letting Willow cast the spell that restored his soul to him. Something had changed this time when he was cursed with his soul. Instead of just feeling guilt for his atrocities, he can also feel her. And he doesn’t want that, he belongs to Buffy.

Spike’s lost count of how many times he’s stood on the outside and watched her go about her daily business on the inside. He can’t help himself though; he’s drawn to her like a moth to a flame. And even though it tears him up, he always makes his way to her house and to his hiding space so he can watch her.  He loves watching her when she thinks that she’s alone. When she’s alone she behaves differently than she does when she’s with her friends. He can sense the darkness in her and he wants to unleash it.

Willow watches Xander as he kisses Cordelia. Over and over again it rips her apart on the inside. She wonders if there was anything that she could have done that would have opened his eyes to her. Perhaps their closeness throughout the years prevented her from being the one on his lap with his arms around her, with his lips on hers. She sighs as she closes her eyes and asks herself why she watches him kissing Cordelia. She can’t figure out why she puts herself through this torment. Yet she’s powerless to stop watching the two of them together.

Giles’ main duty is to watch, it’s not to slay. He is a Watcher and that’s what they do. It hurts to have to watch as his Slayer gets hurt but he’s never really been trained on how to fight the horrors that she fights every day. But he is not about to send a sixteen-year-old girl to her death, so he prepares himself to do her duty rather than just watching her.  She might still die, but at least it won’t be this night. And he knows that he won’t have to live with the guilt of watching her.

Wesley watches as her body slowly changes from the one he loves to an unknown ancient demon. He is powerless and it reminds him of his days in Sunnydale, when he had been sent to watch over Faith and Buffy. He had been powerless then too. He hates the fact that the Council never gave the Watchers training outside of watching. The feeling of powerlessness seems tied to his inability to do anything besides watch. So he does the best he can to comfort her and take care of her, but in the end he watches as she slowly changes.

I really like these, especially the third and fourth ones.

I am glad you liked these. Those particular two practically wrote themselves.

I am glad you liked them.

I love this community because it gives me a chance to explore so many things that I normally wouldn't have had a chance to do so. Plus I think it's made me a better writer.

That they can be. Especially in this particular format. I find that [profile] open_on_sunday allows me to explore pairings that I normally wouldn't touch (ie Spuffy), or things that I am interested in but just don't have a lot of time for.

Mind you to be honest I've written one Spuffy-styled fic when I first started out writing.

I can't criticize since, for cherished pal, I've written Willow/Oz and Willow/Tara!

The thing is I used to like Spuffy but the more I thought about it and as Season Seven progressed I couldn't stand it. Especially after Season Seven... that just killed Spuffy for me. Mind you, I've read some decent Spuffy fanfic.

For me, well, the fact is I've NEVER liked Buffy. So pairing her with ANYONE fails to work for me. But I met some very nice Spuffy writers at WriterCon!

Yeah I can see how that would make the pairing pretty bad for you.

I'm unbelievably narrow and opinionated on BTVS characters! There's some I love, some I tolerate, and MANY that I HATE! I'm a real pain in the behind!

I think that I am an exception when it comes to the fact that one point I would write almost any character and/or pairing at least once. I find most writers tend to have a favourite ship or a character or two that they tend to focus on.

I find that most people do have violent dislikes for certain characters (even me.) So I wouldn't say you were a pain in the behind. I know I once said something about Spike being just okay and my cousin gave me this murderous look.

It's funny, because I'm not a Dru fan at all, but I write her all the time and have even written her sympathetically. So yes, even I can be open-minded!

Spike...just okay? Well, to each her own!

BTW, I started work on the sixth story in The Secret Series today!

Yeah I've found some of the best writers of certain characters aren't necessarily their biggest fans.

And I can't remember what the discussion was about, it was probably Spike on ATS Season five being "just okay." I don't like how the writers treated Spike after a certain point.

I can't wait to read the sixth story... I am so excited now!

I don't know how well I write Dru, but I do write her a fair amount.

I agree that the writers failed Spike ENORMOUSLY! Wussy, Slayer-whipped Spike was a TRAGEDY!

I should have Part Six done by Tuesday!

I love your protrayal of Dru if that counts for anything.

And it's not just that he was Slayer-whipped, I just found that in the second half of ATS Season Five they just used him to annoy the hell out Angel or for Illyria to beat up.

I can't wait... I am so excited now!

Thanks! I'm glad you like the way I write Dru!

You're right, they just threw away Spike's character!

I just hope my fic lives up to your expectations!
