fanfic100 for prompt #75 (shade). Inspired by a request by marenfic for the pairing and the colour grey. Set during an AU Season Five of ATS.
She guided her Watcher to the shade, as he turned ashen at the site of the rotting corpses of the girls that they hadn’t been able to save. Following Willow’s spell and Buffy’s success at destroying the First, Wesley had taken up the mantle of Watcher once more. There were too many Slayers and too few Watchers and since many demons had taken to killing the new Slayers, Wesley had been unable to refuse Giles’ request. Yet the countless times that they had arrived too late, seemed to be taking its toll on Wesley, and even Faith found it hard to cope with their multitude of failures. They had saved the world from the First but at what cost?
Wesley started to tremble, and Faith placed her arms around him as he started to silently cry. She wondered if he had regretted turning down Angel’s offer of working with the vampire in LA at Wolfram and Hart. It seemed so futile, especially when they always seemed to be a step behind the monsters. There weren’t enough of them to stop the monsters from destroying the innocent girls whose lives had changed overnight because of the First. Wesley’s arms tightened around Faith’s slim body as they did their best to give and take strength from one another. They both knew that they would continue what they were doing instead of taking Angel’s offer up of a cushy desk job in LA, because someone had to try to save the newly made Slayers. And there didn’t seem to be any else with their talents or skills to take the job from them.
