Title: Puppet 1/1
Author: Sweetness (aaronlisa@gmail.com)
Rating: FR13
Pairing: Angelus/Connor interaction
Disclaimer: The Buffyverse belongs to Joss Whedon and company.
Notes: Set during A:ts Season 4 during the Angelus story-arc. Written for the Connor Ficathon, assignment at the end of the fic.
Angelus was on the loose and Connor had decided that it was his responsibility to find him and destroy him. After all, Angelus was a soulless monster, the very same soulless monster that Holtz had prepared him to kill. And Connor wouldn’t have to worry about being conflicted because there was no soul that would change the matter from a simple stark black and white matter to one with shades of grey. Instead, it would be a very straightforward issue, Angelus deserved to die for all that he had done against humanity and all that he would continue to do. And ever since, Connor had returned from Quor-Toth he had been waiting for the chance to destroy Angelus, and now he had his chance and he wasn’t going to fail.
He had sent Angel to a watery grave because he couldn’t deny that his father had done a lot of good. But that was only when he had the soul, which was fragile and easily taken away from him. Connor had never expected when he sent Angel to the bottom of the ocean that he would be found. He hadn’t expected Wesley, the very man who was responsible for what had happened to him as an infant, to interfere with his plans. He had also expected Justine to go to her death with the secret of where Angel was buried. But Wesley had interfered and Justine had decided she liked life more than she did the possibility of death. So Angel was found and was released, which made things difficult for Connor. The best he could do was wait until another opportunity presented itself. This time, he wasn’t going to take the chance, when he was finished all that would be left of his father would be dust and ash.
Connor never thought of the hatred he bore for his father. To him, Angel could never really be the father that Holtz was. He never thought that Holtz had merely used him. To the young man, Holtz was his savior. He had taken him from a murderer and raised him to know his full potential, Connor firmly believed that if he had stayed with Angel, the vampire would have coddled him and protected him from everything. Holtz had known that as the son of two vampires, that there was power in him, and that his power should be utilized. Holtz had saved him, and now he was dead, and all that was left was his undead father, who now was soulless, and it was for Holtz that Connor knew he had to destroy the monster his father had become.

He was hunting his prey and he couldn’t believe just how ignorant his prey truly was. Or perhaps the better word was oblivious. It didn’t matter to him, he was the hunter and his prey was his prey. There would only be one outcome in the end. His prey would be another victim to his skills and prowess. He had to stop himself from laughing at his prey, and he wondered where the finely honed skills were or where the keen senses that his prey supposedly had. If his prey had either, then he should have been engaged in a deadly battle. But he was close enough to his prey that all he had to do was shoot a bolt into his prey’s heart and watch his death. However, he didn’t intend to do that because there was no fun in ruining the battle so quickly.

Angelus reached out and touched Connor on the shoulder, when he turned around; Angelus leered at him and said “Boo!” Connor immediately went into a fighting stance that made Angelus laugh. He easily dodged the punch that Connor threw at him and then kicked the younger man. The two sparred silently for a while, and Connor couldn’t help but be reminded of training with Angel.
“You do realize I am not him?” Angelus asked.
“What?” Connor asked as he dodged a punch.
“I am not the soul, which means I don’t care if I kill you.”
”What’s that supposed to mean?”
”Figure it out yourself, Boy Wonder.”
”Boy Wonder? That’s the best you can come up with? I think you’re losing your touch.”
”Well you and the saintly Angel always reminded me of Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder.”
“Who?” Connor said as he delivered a roundhouse kick.
“Oh that’s right, you never got to have a normal life of comics and cartoons. Did you?”
”I never would have been normal.”
”Somehow I think Angel would have given you a normal life.”
“Shut up!” Connor yelled at the vampire.
”Why should I? You know I am right, you know that daddy would have given you everything.”
”Yeah just like he protected me.”
”Wasn’t his fault that he and his team got played.”
”You’re just as much as my father as he is.”
”No kid, I am not, you reek of Darla and of the soul. If you were mine, well let’s just say all Holtz would have been able to steal would be a drained corpse.”
The two continued to fight one another viciously. Angelus was holding back, which only frustrated Connor more. Especially since Angelus was still the superior fighter. Connor couldn’t figure out what Angelus’s game was, and why he was holding back. It didn’t seem as if the vampire was trying to taunt him, which was what he normally did.
“Quit holding back.” Connor snarled.
“Have a death wish do you boy?”
”I am going to kill you!”
”Really, I am still standing.” Angelus said as he threw Connor against the stonewall behind him. “But you aren’t.” Angelus kicked Connor in the ribs.
“Ugh!” Connor grunted as Angelus continued to kick him in his midsection.
“How does it feel to be a puppet?” Angelus asked as he kicked Connor even harder so that his body flew a few feet forward.
“I’m … not a puppet.” Connor snarled as he struggled to stand up.
“Connor, you’re more of a puppet than Angel is with his Powers that Be. What’s more pathetic about you is that the man who’s pulling your strings is a dead man with a vendetta that’s old and dead itself.”
“Don’t even talk about him.” Connor said as he charged Angelus.
“Why do I get the feeling you aren’t talking about soul boy?” Angelus said as he easily avoided Connor and grabbed him by the neck.
“You’re dead!” Connor yelled at the vampire.
“No Puppet, I am not. You’re nothing but a puppet that tries to kill his own father, not because his father was cruel to him or did him any real injustice, but because of a corrupted man who lied to him and told him stories that weren’t even about the man who really fathered him. That’s the thing you and Holtz will never understand, I am not Angel and he’s not me. If Angel could, he would stake himself in the heart to destroy me. And your precious little puppeteer, Holtz, couldn’t stand to kill Angel because of the soul. He didn’t want an innocent soul on his hands but he still thought of Angel as me. So he stole you and trained you to kill him.” Angelus leered at Connor as he continued to slam the boy against the wall, punctuating his words.
“Holtz didn’t care about you, all you were to him was a tool to get back at me. A little puppet for him to play with so that he could hurt me, but he didn’t realize that I don’t care about you.”
Angelus’s face transformed into that of the vampire and he latched his fangs into Connor’s jugular vein. After a few minutes, Angelus dropped the weakened Connor to the ground and leered at him. “Don’t worry little puppet, you’ll live.” Angelus said as he turned to walk away from him. “And oh, you taste just like your mother did, a common whore.”

Perhaps he should have killed the boy when he had a chance; after all he knew that the others were probably doing their best to restore the soul. At least the Beast’s master would keep them occupied until he could take care of the rest of them. He thought about going to Sunnydale to destroy the witch, but he didn’t want to take the risk of running into the Slayer. And he wanted to continue to hunt Connor so that he could destroy the boy. He knew he had the advantage because Connor thought like a human and didn’t realize that a vampire’s way of hunting was to destroy everything in a victim. It wasn’t just about the life that a human had, but it was also about breaking them before taking their life. And that was what Angelus planned to do with Connor… break him and then destroy him. What made it sweeter was that the last thing that Connor would see before he died, was the face of his father, the face of the man who ultimately failed him.
