Snape’s black cloak billowed as he stalked across the grounds towards the imposing school. He was returning from a Death Eater’s meeting where once again he had learned nothing useful and he was starting to suspect that the Dark Lord was suspicious of his loyalties. Then again there were days when Snape wasn’t sure where his own loyalty lay, whether with Albus Dumbledore or with the Dark Lord. As he hurried back to the school, he noticed something white lying on the grass and he silently cursed whatever student had left something laying carelessly on the school property. His eyes widened as he realized that it was not a lost article of clothing or a piece of paper but instead it was a student. When he realized that it wasn’t just any student but Hermione Granger, he knew that something was seriously wrong. None of the Death Eaters or their children would risk attacking Harry Potter or his friends without a direct command from the Dark Lord.
He carefully picked up Hermione and as he carried her to the school, Snape worried that things had drastically changed and one of the Death Eaters had attacked Hermione. Although he wanted to blame it on her dunderheaded friends, he knew that it wasn’t the case. As he walked into the castle, the girl in his arms stirred and he looked down at her. Her eyes widened in surprised and she made a small noise as she tried to get of his arms. For some reason, he did not want to take her to Madame Pomfrey; instead he retained his iron hold on her and carried her to his potions lab. He would get answers from her first before he rushed her to Dumbledore and Pomfrey.
