Notes: Written for goddess_loki who supplies me a lot of great & wonderful challenges. Set during an AU ATS Season Five where Illyria never happened, set around mid-season when Connor finds out who he is and his relationship to Angel.
goddess_loki supplied the theme of separation, along with the pairings, and title.
Although he had promised Angel that he would return to his normal life, Connor had found himself unable to do so. Instead he went out on patrols and tried to keep the streets safe and he helped the helpless. In a way, he was trying to find atonement for the lives that he had helped Jasmine take during her reign. He refused to think about the one life he had willingly sacrificed so that she could enter the world. Likewise, he refused to think about the lives he had almost destroyed just to prove a point to his father.
It was on one of his nightly patrols that he met Faith. At first, he had thought that she was just like him. But she had laughed at him when he had told her that, she had gone to tell him about Slayers. He vaguely remembered something about Slayers but he had dismissed it. Instead he had focused on going to his classes during the day and meeting her at night for their patrols. Together they made quite a team, but he was unable to dismiss the vague feeling that he knew her. Then finally one night when he made his way to meet her, he came across in mid-battle with a vampire and everything clicked into place. He was unable to bottle the rage at what he perceived as her deception and betrayal.
“Heya Connor,” Faith greeted him when she finished staking the vampire.
”Hello,” Connor coldly replied.
“What’s wrong?”
“How about the fact that you’re keeping an eye on me for my father?”
”What the Hell are you talking about?” Faith asked as she folded her arms across her chest.
“Are you going to pretend that you don’t know Angel?” Connor asked.
“No, I know him. What does that have to do with us?”
”As if you’re not watching out for me for him.”
“Like I’d have sex with you if I was. When I realized who you were, Angel didn’t even know about us. He doesn’t even know about us now. I just realized who you were a few days ago.”
“Yeah, right.”
“Look, believe what you want. I don’t have the time for this crap,” Faith calmly said as she turned on her heel and started to walk away from him.
“Wait,” Connor called out to her.
“Why should I? You want to believe the worse of me, and I refuse to go down that path again,” Faith said before she continued to walk away.
As Connor watched her leave him, he had to wonder if he had let her anger misjudge the situation. But he had been so angry when he finally remembered how harsh she had been with him when she had been hunting for Angelus. His shoulders slumped in resignation as he thought about how he had probably deserved it then. He had been anything but rationally when Angelus had been out on the loose; in fact he had wanted to catch Angelus so that he could drive a stake in his undead heart. And he realized that he probably realized to have her leave him because once again he had been irrational.

Fred pulled back from Spike and smiled up at him. He could tell from the look on her face that she had something for him to do. He groaned slightly when she started to speak and wondered how he would be able to refuse her anything.
“Spike, I’m worried about Faith.”
“She’s a big girl who’s quite capable of taking care of herself,” Spike said as he started to nibble at her neck.
“Stop it, Spike. I am serious.”
“So am I.”
“Look, you can either help me or not. But I am concerned about Faith.”
“Fine, what do you want me to do?” Spike growled at her.
“I want you to talk to her,” Fred said as she smiled up at him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
“And what are you going to do, pet?”
“I’m going to find Connor and talk to him.”
“Bloody Hell, luv, no he’s dangerous.”
”So are you,” Fred replied with a sweet smile.
“He’s a loose canon.”
“Oh really?” Fred asked as she leaned up to kiss him.
“Stop that!”
”Stop what?” Fred asked as her hands found their way underneath his shirt.
“Luv, don’t,” Spike purred.
“Do you really want me to stop?”
”Bloody Hell, no,” Spike said as she pushed him down to the bed.

“Spike, why are you doing this?” Faith asked the bleached blonde vampire, her frustration evident in her tone.
“’Cuz Fred asked me to.”
”Do you do everything she asks?”
”Pretty much. I don’t like saying no to her, especially when she gets determined.”
“Well Connor pretty much made himself clear.”
”Faith are you sure that you didn’t just misjudge his reaction? He is the Pouf’s son and well you know how hot-headed Angel can be.”
”I don’t care, I’m not gonna go back to someone who thinks I’d spy on him.”
“Are you sure that you want to turn your back on him like this?”
”Look Spike he turned his back on me first.”
Spike growled in frustration, as it wasn’t working out like Fred had said that it would. Then again his girl was always too optimistic for her own good. She always thought she could fix things, even hopeless causes. But this time, Spike didn’t think she was going to be able to fix things this time.

“How did your meeting with Connor go, pet?”
”Not too good.”
“What did he say?” Spike asked as he pulled Fred into his arms.
“Well he told me that if Faith had truly cared about him then she wouldn’t have walked away or at the very least she would have come back instead of letting two weeks go by. What about Faith?”
”Luv, I hate to say this but I think that this is truly a hopeless case. The two of us aren’t going to get these two back together again. I don’t think anyone is going to be able to.”
”But…” Fred started.
“No buts,” Spike interrupted her before kissing her into silence. “If they’re going to get together it’s because they’re going to do it on their own, not with our help or anyone else’s.”
“Fine,” Fred sighed as she leaned into Spike.
