starlit_desires: (Buffy sad)

This was the fic that I had to write on my way home, because my muse insisted I write it. It's also a Buffy-center fic, one of the first that I've written in a while.

Title: Nightmares
Author: Sweetness (aaronlisa@gmail.com)
Pairing: none
Rating: FR13
Disclaimer: The Buffyverse belongs to Joss Whedon and company.
Notes: Written for [profile] 100_situations for prompt #62 (jump). Set during BTVS Season Six. This is a completely different style for me to be writing in.

In her nightmares, which she has had every single night since her resurrection, she jumps off the rickety platform that sways in the slight wind. She jumps over and over again, as if that one moment is on a continual loop in her dreams. She jumps and sacrifices herself to save the world. To save Dawn.

Two nights turn into a fortnight, which turns into a month and so on. The nightmares don’t stop. And on each night since she’s been raised from the dead, she’s has made her sacrifice again.

And on each night, it’s rendered worthless. She relives the pain of unwanted resurrection, where she is cruelly ripped from a heaven and thrust into purgatory where everything is too bright, too loud and too unfeeling.

She’s like a raw wound with salt rubbed in it. During the day, she lives her painful reality and during the night she dreams of her sacrifice made worthless by her well-intentioned friends, who didn’t know that she wasn’t in hell.

In her nightmares, she relives the casual cruelty of the Master, who merely saw her as a key to release him from his prison.

In her nightmares, she experiences Angelus’ brutality in a way that never did in waking life.

In her nightmares, she is a powerless victim to Spike’s savageness as he uses her for a thousand reasons, none of them to do with love.

In her nightmares, Giles’ eyes turn cold and hard, yet he is full of mirth as he gives Willow the power to raise her from the dead. He stands and watches and laughs as she tries to crawl out of her grave. Instead of helping her, the Watcher pushes her down over and over again as he covers her with more dirt.

And then there are her friends. Their intent becomes evil as their faces melt like wax to reveal the demons in their place.

Dawn is the succubus that sucks her life and pushes her from the tower, finally rendering all the sacrifices that she has made since she was sixteen void and powerless.

When she wakes, her body is caught in a silent scream that comes from her very soul. It’s silent to the rest of the sleeping house, but oh how it rings in her ears. The icy fist of fear grips her heart in a merciless grip and she thinks that she is dying again. And then the moment is over and she fully awakes to a life that she was glad to have shed. Now the colours are too harsh, the light too bright, the pain too sharp and the sounds too loud as she is left to struggle through it, bereft of the warm and safe comfort of a heaven she was torn from.
