For as long as Willow Rosenberg could remember, she had been waiting for Xander to wake up and realize that his dream girl was her. And she had never given up hope that he would do this, even when he had constantly ogled other girls or had asked other girls out. Even when he had a crush on Buffy, Willow still had the hoped that he would turn to her and realize that he loved her. But now as she watched him kissing her worse enemy, Cordelia Chase, Willow no longer felt any hope. Instead she felt as if he had taken a knife and plunged it into her heart. He had turned away from her, in favour of her childhood tormentor and now instead of love all she could feel was a cold hatred forming in the pit of her stomach.

If someone had asked him why he was kissing Cordelia Chase, Xander would have given them a blank look and a confused shrug. The cheerleader was certainly attractive but she wasn’t the one who he really wanted to be kissing. Xander found it ironic that it had taken kissing Cordelia, the girl who had relentlessly tormented him and his friends, for him to realize that she wasn’t the girl for him. As he broke the kiss and moved away from the brunette, Xander turned at the sound of the library doors closing. The glimpse of red hair as Willow ran away was all that Xander needed to realize that he had effectively ruined any chance that he might have had with her. He could feel his heart breaking as he realized that he had just thrown away love in favour of popularity and prestige. As he allowed Cordelia to pull him back in her embrace, Xander felt numb.
