When Willow had asked her to come back to Sunnydale to help out, Faith had been slightly reluctant to return because she was afraid of how the others would react to her. She had hurt a lot of people and the roughest part about finding redemption was coming face to face with her former victims. And returning to Sunnydale would bring her face-to-face with a lot of her victims on a regular basis: Buffy, Dawn, Willow, and Xander. There would be no way that she could hide from them, instead she would be living with the people that she had so casually hurt. As the stretch of highway shortened with each mile that brought them closer to Sunnydale, the knots in Faith’s stomach tightened. It would be easy for her to deal with Buffy, Xander and Willow, just like she had been able to face Wesley, Angel and Cordelia, she could face the three of them. But she was unsure about facing Dawn. All she could see was the look of disbelief, confusion and hurt on Dawn’s face when she had found out about Faith’s betrayal. The event could have happened yesterday, as the memory was still fresh in her mind. It had been late afternoon and she had been strolling down the street as if she owned the place, and considering her association with the Mayor, Faith felt confident in that attitude….

When she saw Buffy and Dawn heading in her direction Faith
decided to cross the street. The last thing that she really needed
was a dramatic confrontation with B. However, before she could
make her escape, Dawn had run up to her and thrown her arms
around the brunette’s waist.

“Faith! How are you? I’ve missed you and Buffy says that you’ve
been too busy to see me,” Dawn breathlessly said.
“Hey kid, uh yeah, I’ve been really busy,” Faith replied as she
hugged the younger girl.
“Do you think that you could come shopping with me and Buffy?”
“I don’t think that would be a good idea, Dawn,” Buffy coldly relied.
“Why not?” Dawn asked with a slight pout.

The two Slayers were very quiet and Dawn kept looking back and forth
between the two of them, waiting for one of them to answer her
question. Faith looked away first and Dawn realized that something
had happened without being told. The look of hurt, confusion and
disbelief on her face cut Faith to the bone.

“I gotta go,” Faith quietly said before she slunk off.

Faith didn’t want to see Dawn again; it was a wound that she didn’t want to reopen again. She had gone from being the younger girl’s hero to being the bad guy in the blink of an eye and she was more afraid to face Dawn than she had ever been afraid of anything else in the world. Facing Dawn would be the hardest thing Faith had done since she had started trying to reform herself. Faith took a deep breath, which caused Willow to look over at her.

“It’ll be a lot easier than you think,” Willow said with a brief smile.
”I hope so,” Faith replied before the two fell into silence again.
